Assistant District Governor, David Hui introduced the new District 7070 Governor, Doug Byers. Doug became a Rotarian 14 years ago with the Whitby Sunrise club where he held several roles at the board level, including the president of the club, and worked at the District level as ADG for several years. Originally, from Ottawa, he attained his BA and Master degree at the Teachers College. He served the Durham School board for 37 years where he taught all grades. He became the vice principal and retired as the principal of the school. During his spare time, if any now, he enjoys curling, painting, traveling and ballroom dancing with his lovely wife, Elizabeth, a retired teacher.
This is Doug Byers 34th presentation in his new capacity as District Governor and he is enjoying and learning every day. He joined Rotary when he was a newly appointed principal 14 years ago. His first exposure to Rotary was through a Rotary event that was held at his school for seniors. So when he was asked by a Rotarian to dine at their meeting he gladly accepted and the rest is history. He urges every member to “Get your ASKS in Gear” and go out there and invite friends, family and associates to come out to meeting to experience what Rotary can do for them and their communities.
Doug brought the key message from RI President, John Kenny – ” the future of Rotary is in you hands”.
This year, the focus will be in the following areas:
· Polio Eradication
· Water
· Health and Hunger
· Literacy
In addition to the above, district 7070 will focus on the three areas as follow:
· HIV Aids RADAR, where Doug asks that each club contributes $139 US for this initiative.
· Rotary at work programs – how to get business to engage citizens in their companies.
· Membership – He asks that each club has at least a net increase of 1 new member.
This year, the new District Governor reminded us about the District Conference on Oct 16-18, 2009 in Collingwood and urged us that it will be fun. There will be a draw on the Sunday at mealtime. The winner will take home a 50 inch Plasma TV.
Also, there is the international conference, right here in Canada, in Montreal on June 20-23, 2020 and Doug is expecting at least 5 members from each club to attend.
